Michael
D. Aiona, MD attended the University of California and completed his orthopaedic
surgery residency at the University of Utah Medical Center.
After completing a year of fellowship training in pediatric
orthopaedics at the Shriners
Hospital in
Greenville,
SC, he served as the Assistant Chief of Staff
and Education Director at the Shriners
Hospital for Children in Lexington, KY
from 1984-1986. Since
1986, Dr. Aiona has worked full time at
Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, OR
and is presently the Chief of Staff after serving as Assistant Chief
of Staff for 22 years. He is
the Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory and Clinical
Research. Dr. Aiona holds an academic appointment as Adjunct
Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics &
Rehabilitation Department at
Oregon
Health
Sciences
University.
Dr. Aiona serves on the editorial board of Gait & Posture, DMCN, and
JBJS and serves on several committees within the AACPDM and POSNA.
He has presented numerous lectures and abstracts nationally and
internationally and is widely published.
In addition,
Research Interests:
Outcomes of interventions in patients with limb length inequality,
cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and other neuromuscular conditions.
Dr. Aiona has been principal investigator for several large
prospectivegrants from the Shriners Hospital,
focusing on energy expenditure, orthotic efficacy, strength
training, selective dorsal rhizotomies,
and spina bifida.
